Oklahoma's Future is on the Line

Tell Lawmakers: Don’t play games with our tax dollars, our jobs, or our retirement security.

A group of Oklahoma lawmakers are working to pass legislation that would potentially cost Oklahoma hundreds of millions of dollars in additional expenses to the state.

The legislation is a rewrite of a 2022 law that sought to ban financial institutions over responsible investment practices. State courts found the law unconstitutional and immediately halted all provisions of it. However, some damage had already occurred, and experts found that it had already cost the state $185 million in taxpayer dollars.

According to a study from the Oklahoma Rural Society, it would have increased borrowing costs for municipalities and forced the abandonment of critical projects that benefit Oklahoma's communities. It would have also forced state pension funds to fire specific asset managers, unless they opted out, costing these funds millions of dollars, which would hurt the public employees that rely on them, like police officers and firefighters.

Now, some lawmakers want to rewrite the law and pass similar legislation that would do just as much harm to Oklahoma’s pensioners and taxpayers, and the state as a whole. Many public employees rely on pensions, and by taking from them, you jeopardize the ability of hardworking citizens to retire after a lifetime of service.

Oklahoma pensioners and taxpayers deserve better. Call your lawmakers and tell them: No more unconstitutional laws. No more wasted millions.
